Important Update to API Exams

Important Update: Changes to API ICP Exam Administration

We want to inform all our visitors about a significant change announced by the American Petroleum Institute (API) regarding the administration of their Individual Certification Program (ICP) exams.

Discontinuation of Remote API Proctored Exams

API has recently decided to discontinue the option for remotely proctored exams for their core certification programmes, effective immediately. This means that all future exams, starting with the September 2024 exam window, must now be taken at a physical test centre operated by Prometric.

Reasons for This Decision

API has provided several reasons for this change:

  • Internet Reliability: There is a need for a reliable and stable internet connection during remote exams, which may not be accessible to all candidates, especially those in remote or rural areas.
  • Quality and Consistency: Concerns about technical issues, interruptions, or distractions that could affect the exam experience and outcomes, thereby compromising the quality and consistency of the exams.
  • Exam Integrity and Security: Challenges and risks to the integrity and security of remotely proctored exams that may not be fully manageable in a remote environment.
  • Industry Expectations: A preference within the industry for face-to-face, proctored exams as a more valid and reliable measure of competence and qualification.

API believes that returning to the traditional in-person testing method will ensure the quality, validity, and security of their certification exams, thereby upholding the credibility and recognition of their credentials.

How This Affects You

If you plan to take your exam online, you will now need to reschedule at a physical Prometric test centre. It is crucial to rebook your exam as soon as possible to secure a spot.

Our Support for You

At Wilkinson Coutts, we understand the stress and frustration this change may cause. Although we have no control or influence over API’s decision, we are committed to supporting our delegates through this transition.
